Beginning with the legacy of hush harbors, Willis considers the home library, salon and barbershop as contemporary institutions: places where Black people gather to teach, debate, imagine, mourn, create and become. Through portraiture, ceremonial adornment and a visual language shaped by editorial beauty and fashion, Willis honors the networks of care and cultural transmission that exist beyond formal recognition. These works remind us that culture does not survive by accident. It survives because people gather, remember, create and teach one another.
