About This Event

Join us for the opening reception of I SPEAK WITH CLOTH by Kianga Jinaki at the Community Gallery. Through textiles and fibers, Kianga Jinaki communicates and expresses the stories she carries within, as well as her experiences with life and culture. Her creative process is a conversation with cloth, shaped by the patterns, textures, colors, and stories held within each textile. She responds to these characteristics through hand and machine stitching, embellishment, painting, stamping, dyeing, unraveling, layering, draping, appliqué, and other forms of manipulation. Drawing from the stories and possibilities of fabric, Kianga’s work takes many forms, including dolls, quilts, and collages. This exhibition brings together textile works from the beginning of her artistic career to the present, inviting visitors to explore how vintage and contemporary fabrics, textures, colors, and found materials can come together to create new layers of meaning. As part of the reception, enjoy a special 20-minute performance by MORE THAN A DRUM Percussion Ensemble, led by Abasi Johnson. Based in Washington, DC, the ensemble brings together seasoned players who perform traditional and improvisational music. This exhibit will be on view September 28 to October 28, 2026. Free! Sandy Spring Museum, Inc. is supported in part by funding from the Maryland State Arts Council \(msac.org\), the Montgomery County Government, and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
